Republic of Turkey is a transcontinental country located mainly on the Anatolian peninsula in Western Asia, with a smaller portion on the Balkan peninsula in Southeastern Europe. Its location has given it geopolitical and strategic importance and has been inhabited by diverse civilisations throughout history. Eventhough the capital is Ankara, the country is well known with its culturally and historically enriched city İstanbul, which straddles the continents Europe and Asia. Turkey has the world’s 13th largest GDP by PPP and the country is among the founding members of the OECD and the G-20. Turkey is negotiating its accession to the European Union (EU) as a candidate state, while being a charter member of the UN, and an early member of NATO, the IMF, and the World Bank. Tourism in Turkey plays an important role in its economy, as having 17 UNESCO World Heritage Sites and the world’s oldest religious site Göbekli Tepe.
